Elizabeth's Pregnancy Journey: Trusting God in a Season of Waiting

Elizabeth was the wife of a well-respected priest. She came from good lineage, a descendant of Aaron. She was righteous in God's sight, keeping all of His commands blamelessly, devoted in her worship and her service. Elizabeth had seemingly done everything right in her cultures eyes and in God’s eyes and yet she was unable to have children.

“They had no children because Elizabeth was unable to conceive, and they were both very old.”

The Weight of Her Waiting

The law and culture of her time held to the belief expressed in Deuteronomy 7:12–14, that those who were obedient to God's commands would not be barren. Elizabeth had done all the right things. She came from a holy lineage. And still, her life didn't align with what God to had promised in his word.

In her culture, having children was considered the primary function of a woman, and childlessness was typically read as the woman's failing rather than her husband's. Alongside that came the toll of the waiting itself; the speculation, the gossip, the humiliation she likely faced within her community. She may have wrestled with disappointment, sadness, shame, and loneliness. She would have had questions. Perhaps she asked God when, all while being reminded whether by others or by her own thoughts of the very promise in Deuteronomy that seemed to be passing her by.

And yet, in the middle of all of it, she remained faithful. Obedient. Still serving alongside her husband in his priestly duties, still present in her worship, even while the one thing she longed for continued to feel out of reach, year after year.

God's Timing, Not Hers

In His timing God performed a miracle in Elizabeth, despite her limitations. Her age had made the promise seem impossible. But the woman who was known as barren became pregnant.

The impossible became possible.

Her dream became a reality, her desire was fulfilled. God kept His promise, and in doing so, He rewrote the narrative that had surrounded her for so long.

A Story That Didn't Just Belong to Her

Elizabeth's story didn't just end with her own joy. God used it for a purpose bigger than her own family. Her miracle stirred faith in Mary, encouraging Mary of what God's power could do, that He performs miracles and makes the impossible possible, at the very moment Mary needed that encouragement most.

Elizabeth became the chosen vessel to carry and birth John the Baptist, a son with a destiny far beyond her household. Her waiting, her faithfulness, and her miracle all became part of a much bigger story she couldn't fully see whilst in the middle of it.

For Your Own Waiting Season

Whatever you're waiting on, a pregnancy, an answer, or a promise that feels delayed. Elizabeth's story offers a few things worth holding onto:

• Keep hope alive in the waiting.

• Stay faithful and obedient while you wait. She continued to love and serve God fully, even while her circumstances did not yet reflect His promise.

• Trust that your story serves a purpose beyond you. God used Elizabeth's miracle to strengthen Mary’s faith.

• Remember who you're carrying, and who's carrying you. Elizabeth was entrusted with a child of great destiny. Whatever you are waiting for, God's timing has not forgotten you.

• Trust God's timing over your own. He makes all things beautiful in its time. (Ecclesiastes 3:11)

Waiting seasons rarely feel purposeful while you're inside them. Elizabeth's story shows that waiting is an opportunity for God to display his power and perform a miracle. God uses your story to encourage others and bring glory to His name.
